In 1555 a ghetto was established on the banks of the Tiber River: it was essentially a prison-neighborhood within Rome, surrounded by fences and gates. It was not until 1848 that Pope Pius IX ordered the dismantling. The Great Synagogue was inaugurated in 1904 and it is a symbol of the emancipation achieved by Roman Jews after the abolition of the ghetto. Today, the former ghetto is a lively area, frequented night and day by both tourists and Romans: everyone can find a reason to fall in love with the Jewish quarter.
